Fine Antique Indian Amritsar Handmade Wool Rug

$ 55,000
  • Description
    The city of Amritsar, situated in Northwestern India, became a center of Indian rug weaving in the nineteenth century. Who would have known how much impact would that make on the weaving culture in India? With the rise of the British supremacy in the 1850s, along with the Crystal Palace Exhibit in London, Amritsar rugs captured the attention of the public and sparked the dramatic revival of Indian rug weaving. Under the influence of European rug importers, the establishment of looms and the availability of fine quality wool from sheep raised in nearby mountains and valleys, weavers adapted their traditional Indian carpet designs to correspond with western tastes and European demand.

    This stunning antique Amritsar rug was hand woven in the late 19th century, circa 1880. Not a line seems to be out of place in this stunning composition - a mark of a true masterpiece. The pattern of this antique rug certainly draws the eye - the main field is filled with a palmette and vinery trellis all over within a complex frame. The color palette of this piece is simple, yet elegant. Earthy tones of brown are combined with sandy yellow and delicate beige with just a hint of balancing gray.

    A rather large size of this antique Indian rug, 13'5" × 16'7" (409 × 505 cm), makes it a great choice for either a spacious household or a large office. One thing is certain - such a wonderful Indian rug  is bound to make your interior look special.
