Description
A hand-knotted wool rug from the early 20th century, in excellent condition. This is a rare Gavin Morton piece with a quintessential of Art & Crafts design. The composition is symmetrical, with an angular central medallion and large stylized wisteria flowers and other tree blossoms scattered throughout a ivory-beige field. A pink border and thinner borders abundant in floral elements frame the composition.
British artist Gavin Morton (1867–1954) is perhaps best known for his work as head of the design department for Morton & Co, a Scotland based textile company founded by his uncle Alexander Morton. Over time, Morton & Co aligned itself with the rising Arts and Crafts movement in Great Britain.
This is Arts and Crafts by Gavin Morton number BB8552 in our internal collections. This rug was manufactured around 1900 in England, which means it is already 124 years old.
The dimensions of this rug are: 10'9" × 17'1" width × length, which corresponds to 327 × 520 cm in the metric system. This rug comes from the "Antique" era of carpet production.
