Mid-20th Century Samarkand Brown, Gold, Orange, Pink, Purple, Red Wool Rug

$ 18,000
  • Description
    Samarkand (meaning "Stone Fort"), one of the oldest inhabited cities in Central Asia, is home to unique rugs that for years have been sought-after by collectors and tastemakers around the world. This vintage Samarkand rug is a paragon of the oasis town’s craft.

    Its main field carries a round medallion surrounded by Trees of Life, florals, diamonds, vase motifs, and four corner spandrels. This rich and miscellaneous design is enclosed within a series of borders carrying swastikas – a symbol of divinity and spirituality in Indian religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism – and flowering climbers. This vintage Samarkand rug unfolds before us a warm and invigorating palette of red, pink, purple, orange, gold, brown and black.

    The vintage rug was made by hand of high-quality wool in accordance with traditional, centuries-old techniques. Under the condition of proper maintenance, it will serve its owners for generations without any signs of wear.
