Mid-20th Yellow Century Indian Dhurrie Flat-Woven Cotton Rug

$ 28,000
  • Description
    This circa 1940 antique Indian Dhurrie rug consists of a main field of chartreuse, with abstract diamond patterns appearing throughout. A gray main border completes the modern yet simultaneously traditional look of the antique carpet. A Dhurrie is a flat-woven cotton antique carpet from India, traditionally used as floor covering. Although at some point overshadowed by luxuriant Mughal pile carpets, in the twentieth century these antique flat-woven Indian vintage rugs began to be recognized and lauded as a significant art form from the Indian subcontinent. Transcending social boundaries, the Dhurrie rug was used by both commoner and royalty; at its simplest it was a multi-purpose textile used as a floor covering, bedding or packaging, while at its most elaborate it was woven with the finest fibers and enhanced by gold-wrapped thread when gracing the palaces of royalty.
