Samarkand Rug

$ 26,000
  • Description
    Khotan rugs are produced in East Turkestan and are interchangeably referred to as Samarkand rugs due to their close proximity to the cultural city center of the same name. Khotan rugs are distinguished by their geometric patterns ranging from soft pastels to bold color palettes. This piece features parallel rows of stylized pomegranate trees, symbols of fertility, each sprouting from a small vase placed at the base of the composition complement by geometric borders. This ancient motif is characteristic of this area and is represented on the rugs of the oasis of Khotan and Yarkand since at least the 17th century.
