Description
A handmade Swedish Rya wool rug with a cozy pile from the mid 20th century. It is in excellent original condition, consistent with age. This Swedish rya constitutes the quintessence of the Northern craft. Although its field bears no pattern the entire strength lies in the long, shaggy pile that features dark hues of purple, brown, emerald green and contrasting rust short edges. Its style – Rya – was developed many centuries ago in Scandinavia to protect the people, especially the mariners living off the sea, from the harsh weather conditions. The first Ryas were modeled on natural animal fur, hence they are characterized by an exceptionally shaggy, long pile.
