Description
EARLY 18TH CENTURY AUBUSSON MYTHOLOGICAL TAPESTRY 'DIANA'
PROBABLY AFTER A CARTOON BY ISAAC MOILLON
18th century tapestry depicting a couple visiting the Roman goddess Diana in her temple. The couple in the foreground holding hands and dressed in traditional Roman attire, he in military uniform and she in a full length dress with a head dress. Diana seated high in her temple on the right hand side, seen with her traditional bow and arrow, and crescent moon headdress. Flowers and trees throughout. With a richly floral patterned border with crowns and ostrich feathers in the corners.Woven in wool and silk, Aubusson, France c, 1720.
There is a patch to the bottom right of the tapestry and the border has been altered on the bottom left. Backed in linen and restored in France in 1996.
In Roman mythology Diana, the goddess of the hunt was also a patron of childbirth and fertility worshipped by couples as is likely the case in this tapestry.
