    A SILVER PLATED JUG COMMISSIONED FOR UNIVERSITY COLLAGE OXFORD

    The generous, globular glass body rests upon a finely beaded silver foot, exquisitely chased with delicate Neoclassical ornamentation. The silver plated collar is adorned with repoussé floral garlands and bold lion masks. Crowning the lid, a finely cast lion stands in noble profile upon the University Collage Oxford coat of arms. Commissioned to mark the sporting achievements of Edward Southwell Garnier in 1870 hurdles, who then went on to become the British 120 yards hurdles champion in 1871 and a first class cricketer for Oxford University.
