Japonesque sterling silver gravy boat on stand. Made by Alvin Corp. in Provence, ca 1890. Boat: Bellied bowl with helmet mouth, high-looping handle, and domed foot; gilt-washed interior. Stand: Upturned and concave sides and scrolled rim; raised center with plain fitted well. Chased ornament in form of bold and dramatic chrysanthemums—splayed irregular flower heads and tight buds on whiplash stems—interspersed with leaves. Fully marked including maker’s stamp and no. 2996. Very good condition.
