An Important Ottoman Yildiz Palace Silver Gilt and Enamel Plate, Sphinx of Egypt

$ 48,500
  • Description
    An Important Yıldız Palace Silver-Gilt and Enamel Presentation Plate Depicting the Sphinx of Giza
    Ottoman Turkey, Late 19th Century

    A rare and important Yıldız Palace silver-gilt and enamel presentation plate, exquisitely decorated in richly colored enamels and centered with a finely hand-painted view of the Great Sphinx of Giza, with the pyramids rising in the background. This remarkable work reflects the refined artistic production of the Ottoman imperial ateliers during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II (r. 1876–1909), a period marked by technical innovation, artistic sophistication, and the use of luxury objects as instruments of diplomacy and prestige.

    The broad circular form is lavishly adorned with intricate arabesque scrollwork in vivid turquoise, cobalt, white, and emerald enamels, all heightened with finely applied gilding. The border is rhythmically structured with repeating crescent-shaped reserves, each filled with delicate foliate ornament, interspersed with geometric and stylized floral motifs—elements drawn from classical Ottoman design vocabulary and reinterpreted with late 19th-century elegance.

    At the center, the Sphinx is rendered in finely shaded sepia enamels, executed with a painterly sensitivity that closely recalls contemporary photographic imagery. Unlike transfer-printed examples, this scene is entirely hand-painted, demonstrating a high level of technical control and artistic nuance. The inclusion of an Egyptian subject is particularly significant, reflecting the importance of Egypt within the Ottoman sphere and the fascination with monumental antiquity during the period.

    The reverse retains its original gilded surface and bears Ottoman workshop marks consistent with known Yıldız Palace productions. Comparable plates—typically depicting views of Constantinople or imperial pavilions—have appeared in major international auctions, underscoring the rarity and desirability of such works. The present example, distinguished by its Egyptian imagery and finely executed enamel painting, stands apart within this elite group.

    Objects of this nature were produced within or for the imperial court and often presented as diplomatic gifts to foreign dignitaries, high-ranking officials, and members of royal households. As such, they represent not only the height of Ottoman decorative arts but also the cultural and political narratives of the late empire.
