Description
This refined spice rack, produced in Brazil by Casa Finland circa 1960, offers a rare glimpse into the domestic side of Brazilian Modernism—where thoughtful design extended beyond furniture into everyday ritual and use. Crafted entirely from solid Brazilian hardwood, the set consists of a wall-mounted rack and three lidded containers, each hand-turned and carefully proportioned.
The containers are labeled canela, cravo, and pimenta, underscoring the object’s cultural specificity while reinforcing its functional clarity. The warm, richly patinated wood reveals subtle grain variation, softened through decades of handling, and the piece retains its original Casa Finland label—an important marker of authenticity.
Founded in mid-century Brazil, Casa Finland was known for producing well-designed domestic objects that balanced Nordic restraint with Brazilian material intelligence, favoring solid woods, honest construction, and quiet elegance. Their work occupied a space between artisanal tradition and modern industrial design, making surviving examples increasingly scarce.
Both sculptural and utilitarian, this spice rack embodies the intimacy and intelligence of mid-century Brazilian design at a human scale. Discover more in person or book a private appointment.
