DELFT POLYCHROME CHARGER
DECORATED WITH A PARROT, ROCKWORK, SUGAR APPLES, AND FLOWERS
London, Probably Lambeth Circa 1765

Diameter: 13 1/2 inches

Reference: Please see John C. Austin British Delft at Williamsburg, plate 323, page 178 and Michael Archer Delftware: the Tin -Glazed Earthenware of the British Isles, page 197 (B.175). Quite a few of these plates are still in existence so it must have been a popular design in its day. The Victoria and Albert Museum and Historic Deerfield are a few of the museums which own examples.

We are told that the “pine cones” on the rim are actually sugar apples from the Caribbean and South America which fits with the use of exotic birds like the parrot used by English delft potters in their Chinoiserie designs.

We also have an almost identical charger (7194.1).
