Description
Large silver plated charger with mythological and battle scenes
English, 19th Century
Height 4cm, diameter 68cm
This silver plated charger depicts scenes of battle between humans and mythical creatures which surround the plain central medallion. Executed in low-relief, knights and mermaids as well as centaurs and snakes are depicted alongside each other in a design where the borders between reality and fantasy are becoming blurred. Acanthus leaf pattern links the individual stories adorning various parts of the charger.
The broad border is too cast in low-relief and is decorated with further acanthus leaf pattern. Among the foliage are four framed profile busts in high-relief. Ropework border frames the beautifully made designs.
