Pair of Victorian novelty sterling silver salt and pepper shakers. Made by Gorham in Providence in 1881. Ball form in form of male head. The so-called Man in the Moon represented as a jowly middle-aged earthling. Furrowed brows and bulging glass bead eyes suggest a choleric temperament. Hollow with hinged bottom. Fully marked including maker’s stamp, date letter, and no. 1680. Very good condition. Damage to one eye. Possibly a scratched cornea.
