Description
A refined and highly unusual Japanese cloisonné enamel charger attributed to Gotō Seizaburō, distinguished not only by its elegant pictorial composition but by the exceptional and fully realized decoration of its reverse—an attribute reserved for works of the highest quality.
The obverse presents a finely composed landscape of cranes in flight above a tranquil waterside setting. The birds are rendered with remarkable precision, their wings delicately articulated through fine cloisonné wirework, conveying both movement and grace. The surrounding landscape is executed in softly graduated enamel tones, creating a sense of depth and a painterly atmosphere rarely achieved within the medium.
Encircling the scene is a dark ground border composed entirely of stylized cloud motifs, a distinctive and highly controlled design element that frames the composition while reinforcing its atmospheric quality. This border provides a subtle yet sophisticated transition between the pictorial field and the outer rim, demonstrating a refined approach to spatial organization.
What distinguishes this charger most significantly is the extraordinary treatment of the reverse. Rather than being left plain or minimally finished, the entire surface is richly decorated with a shimmering gold-flecked aventurine ground, animated by a wide array of butterflies rendered in varied forms and vibrant colors. These are interspersed among stylized floral motifs and scrolling ornament, all executed with exceptional finesse and precision. The result is a fully conceived secondary composition—transforming the object into a complete work of art on both sides.
The outer border is finished with a turquoise band and intricate scrolling decoration, visually unifying the obverse and reverse while enhancing the overall richness of the design.
Works attributed to Gotō Seizaburō are celebrated for their refined compositions, precise wirework, and harmonious balance between naturalistic imagery and decorative structure. This example embodies those qualities while introducing an additional level of rarity through its fully decorated reverse—an uncommon feature even among high-quality Meiji cloisonné.
