Description
A large circa 1815 blue and white Staffordshire transferware platter produced by Spode in the 'Gothic Castles' pattern having shaped body with underglaze transfer printed decoration, the central reserve having Gothic castle in an Asiatic garden landscape, the chinoiserie border with animal, architectural, and figural vignette cartouches and animal in landscape roundels. The charming, but unusual imagery portrayed in this pattern, combining European "Gothick" architecture within an oriental landscape is typical of the "first transitional period" of Staffordshire pottery patterns which joined 'Chinese' or 'oriental' motifs with British and Eurocentric designs. An exceptional example.
