Description
Large English silver-plated and cut glass epergne centrepiece, 20th Century
English, 20th Century
Height 79cm, width 91cm, depth 60cm
This striking 20th-century English epergne combines masterful silver-plated craftsmanship with cut-glass bowls of exceptional quality, making it a statement piece of formal dining culture.
At its centre, a tall silver-plated stem supports a large glass dish, its rim scalloped and its surface intricately fluted and engraved. Around it, four smaller dishes extend gracefully, each decorated with the same crisp detail. The glass bowls, designed to refract light, create a glittering display, perfectly offset by the sculptural silver base. Cast and chased with scrolling foliage and ornamental motifs, the silverwork reflects the richness and technical skill characteristic of English decorative metalwork.
Epergnes of this grandeur were central to the ceremonial dining table, intended not only to hold fruit or sweetmeats but to impress guests with their sheer magnificence. This example embodies that purpose perfectly, its imposing height, balanced design, and refined decoration making it a centrepiece of distinction.
Today, the piece resonates as a decorative object, offering collectors the opportunity to acquire an outstanding example of 20th-century silver-plated and glass design. Its condition, and dramatic presence mark it as an ideal addition to collections of English silver or to interiors seeking a statement of timeless luxury. -
