Double Eagle Silver Plated Victorian Figural Napkin Ring. American, Circa 1885

Sold Sold
  • Description
Animal and bird themed napkin rings were quite popular, and used frequently by silver plate manufacturers. They are highly sought after by collectors of Victorian figural napkin rings. Manufactured by the Middletown Plate Company, Middletown Connecticut, Circa 1885; the company was formed in 1864 by Edward Payne and Henry Bullard, and merged with the International Silver Company in 1899. The ring depicts two matching eagles sitting proudly with wings spread, one on each side of the ring. The ring itself is highly engraved with a nicely detailed floral pattern (see image). Underneath is the marking "Middleton Silver Plate" with scales of justice logo; and the inventory number "74".
The ring is in almost perfect condition and all original with all of it's silver plate intact.

    Dimensions: 3 3/8" long x 1 3/4" wide x 2" high

Rings were used, not only for entertaining and special occasions, but also to identify each member of the family's napkin, since the laundry was not done daily and the napkins were reused. Victorian silver plated napkin rings are highly sought after, and collectors often like to use them at dinner parties, matching up rings with the personalities of their guests.

Note: Please see my listings for other silver plate and figural napkin rings.

Provenance: This ring is from my own personal collection of silver plated Victorian Napkin rings.
