Description
This rare bonbonnière, designed by Nils Fougstedt and produced by Fabriksaktiebolaget Kronsilver (FAK) in Sweden during the 1930s, represents an exemplary instance of early 20th-century Swedish metalwork, characterized by a disciplined formal language and sensitivity to material aging. Crafted from bronze, the vessel reflects Fougstedt’s restrained yet refined aesthetic, merging classical proportions with the tactile richness of patinated surfaces.
The bonbonnière features a smooth, rounded bowl set atop a compact pedestal base, creating a balanced, architectural silhouette. The fitted lid is subtly domed and finished with a flat, circular finial that provides both a functional grip and a formal counterpoint to the curved profile of the vessel. This interplay of horizontal and vertical elements reflects Fougstedt’s training in decorative arts and his affinity for functional, geometrically grounded forms.
The exterior surface is distinguished by a mottled greenish-blue patina, developed through natural oxidation processes over the course of decades. This variegated finish introduces a visual depth and complexity, enhancing the tactile and sculptural qualities of the bronze. In contrast, the interior retains a more exposed bronze tone, its warm luster emphasizing the material’s inherent richness and offering a subtle chromatic dialogue between interior and exterior.
The surface of the piece shows minor scratches and wear consistent with age and use, which contribute to its historical authenticity. The lid fits securely, aligning cleanly with the vessel rim, and the precision of its detailing—particularly along the edge junctions—remains well preserved. The underside of the piece bears the hallmark of Fabriksaktiebolaget Kronsilver (FAK), affirming its provenance and production by one of Sweden’s respected metalwork firms active in the first half of the 20th century.
Nils Fougstedt, known for his work in metal and his contributions to Swedish decorative arts, was part of a generation of designers who advanced a synthesis of tradition and modernity. His approach often emphasized craftsmanship, proportion, and the expressive potential of surface treatments, all of which are evident in this compact but meticulously crafted object.
Measuring 14 cm in diameter and 13 cm in height (5.5 × 5.1 inches), this bonbonnière is both a functional container and a sculptural object, exemplifying the Swedish Art Deco era’s emphasis on material quality, subdued ornamentation, and formal clarity. It remains a distinguished piece of early modern Swedish design, valued for its elegance, rarity, and artisanal execution.
