Set of Eight Royal Worcester Ichthyological porcelain plates
English, Early 20th Century
Height 2cm, diameter 23cm
This exceptional collection of porcelain plates are a set of eight marine, 'ichthyological' (from the Greek' ichthus' for 'fish'), was made by Royal Worcester Porcelain, one of the leading British firms and one of the oldest still in production, in the early part of the twentieth century. Each displaying a pair of fish, against various backgrounds including ponds, pools, brooks and small waterfalls, they are united by subject and colour palette, creating a beautiful yet whimsical set of decorative objects.
They bear blue-printed marks, titles and the pattern number Z565 to reverse, and were painted by H. Ayrton, and are signed to the front:' Harry Ayrton (English, 1905-1976).' -
