Description
Produced by Taller Maya in collaboration with artisans of the Yucatán Peninsula, this hand-carved serving board reflects a contemporary continuation of regional woodworking traditions. Rooted in local material knowledge and shaped through manual carving techniques, the piece distills utility to its essential form while preserving the integrity of the wood.
The board is defined by an elongated oval silhouette with a subtle lateral extension that functions as a discreet handle. Its compact proportions and gently tapered edge create structural clarity, allowing the object to read as both tool and sculptural plane. The vertical grain orientation emphasizes the length of the form, articulating a quiet sense of movement within an otherwise restrained geometry.
Crafted from Tzalam, a dense hardwood native to the Yucatán Peninsula, the board reveals warm amber-brown tonal variation and a pronounced linear grain. The surface has been carefully finished to enhance the wood’s natural depth without obscuring its texture, reflecting a commitment to material truth over embellishment. The carving process preserves the mass and strength of the hardwood, resulting in a piece anchored by durability and balance.
Function is fully integrated into the form. The broad, uninterrupted surface accommodates service with ease, while the projecting handle allows for controlled lifting and presentation. Rather than decorative excess, the design relies on proportion and grain to achieve presence. -
