Tiffany Water Pitcher Presented for 1905 New York Yacht Club Cruise
-
Description
Edwardian Classical sterling silver water pitcher. Helmet mouth and high-looping scroll handle; bellied bowl on domed foot. Chased scroll and flower ornament including 4 vacant frames alternating with 4 diaper frames on bowl.
On neck engraved itinerary: “New York Yacht Club / Annual Cruise / 1905 / Glen Cove to Morris Cove, August 11 / Morris Cove to New London, August 12 / New London to Newport, August 14 / Won by / Schooner Agatha / Captain William S. Eaton”.
It was a cruise not a race and counted more than 150 boats, including the Vanderbilts’ and Astors’. This piece, which is more a Gilded Age participation trophy than a prize for nautical savvy, is a testament above all to Captain Eaton’s social standing.
Fully marked including maker’s stamp, pattern no. 12423, and director’s letter C (1902-7). Very good condition.
