-
Description
This extremely rare wheel-carved Tiffany Favrile Glass Claret Pitcher features an exceptional Sterling Silver mount by Tiffany & Company.
The thick clear glass of the wide, rounded body is decorated with an all-over intaglio motif of green grape leaves, clusters of rounded purple grapes interspersed with thin light brown vines.
The cylindrical neck is mounted with sterling silver spout by Tiffany & Company decorated with a motif of applied grape leaves with chased detailing, with clusters of rounded silver grapes and coiling vine tendrils dangling down over the edge of the mount onto the glass body. A thick, applied handle joins the body of the pitcher to the sterling silver mount.
Two related examples with similar motifs, signatures and matching Tiffany & Co. Sterling Silver mounts are in important museum collections: a Wine Jug is in the permanent collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art (accession no. 78.269), and a large Favrile Glass bowl with Sterling Silver mount donated by famed Tiffany collector Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. to the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, VA (accession no. 71.6285).
The Favrile Glass body features an inscribed signature and date code on the underside; the Sterling Silver mount is fully hallmarked. -
