Description
A small ceramic tea bowl (chawan) by Japanese American artist Toshiko Takaezu (American, 1922 - 2011). The hand-built form shows slight irregularity and is covered with a brilliant glaze in striking turquoise, red and blue colors. A bold stroke of turquoise circumvents the exterior of the bowl and morphed into mottled blue and green in places and mixed further with the reddish background. The interior is curiously glazed red with a circular blue stroke. Despite of its relatively small size, the decoration on this bowl is particularly striking with a sense of Zen. An attractive piece for meditation.
The artist's work was heavily influenced by the Japanese ceramic tradition and aesthetics. The bowl is signed with the artist's cypher on the underside. -
