Description
A glazed ceramic tea bowl (chawan) by Japanese American artist Toshiko Takaezu (American, 1922 - 2011). The well-balanced form is hand built and shows slight irregularity, further accentuated with wheel grooves. The surface is covered with greyish-white glaze with the lower portion covered in a beautiful abstract glaze that transitions from light beige to a deep brown, with very subtle purple color in places. The color shift is subdued and required attention from the viewers. The interior is speckled with scattered tiny dark marks.
A quiet piece that requires contemplation.
The artist's work was heavily influenced by the Japanese ceramic tradition and aesthetics. The bowl is signed with the artist's cypher on the underside. -
