Description
A large ceramic bowl (Chawan) by Japanese American artist Toshiko Takaezu (American, 1922 - 2011). The deep form bowl features a wheel-turned robust body supported by a short round foot ring. Slightly off round in an organic bell shape, the interior surface of bowl showcases expressive glaze pattern with two prominent wind-like strokes, ocher on the deep brown. On the exterior wall, which is dark brown transitioning to black in a matt finish, lighter ocher color glaze was applied free flowing both horizontally and vertically, forming a lovely abstract pattern. The color palette of this bowl is quite somber, in tone of dark earthy, yet the abstract strokes and splashes, subtle as they are, display a quiet drama if one observes closely. The color shift is fluent and spontaneous, exemplifying the wabi-sabi spirit of the artist's work. The base is incised with the artist's cypher.
