Ceramic Centerpiece Vessel in Sculptural Form Warren Mackenzie
-
Description
A very fine studio ceramic vessel with exceptional sculptural form by American potter Warren Mackenzie (1924-2018). In a barrel shape with slightly concaved wall, the centerpiece stands on a circular foot. The stoneware was glazed in a greenish yellow hue and the surface features deeper brown speckles in a mesmerizing radiating pattern. This is an exception piece with an interesting form and glaze by the renowned potter.
Warren MacKenzie was a student of Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, the British and Japanese potters who were masters of Mingei (folk art) pottery. Mackinzie is credited with bringing the functional Mingei tradition to the United States and spreading it through his own art and mentorship during his long tenure at the University of Minnesota.
