Wood & Hughes, sterling silver 6-piece tea set from the late 19th century, in exquisite repousse pattern, with highly ornate floral designs adorning the body, consisting of:
- a coffee pot, measuring 8'' in height by 10'' from handle to spout
- a tea pot, measuring 7'' in height by 9 3/4'' from handle to spout
- a covered, two-handled sugar bowl, measuring 6 1/2'' in height with the lid by 7 1/4'' from handle to handle
- a sugar bowl, measuring 3 3/4'' in height by 6 3/4'' from handle to handle
- a creamer, measuring 4 3/8'' in height by 5 3/4'' from handle to spout
- a waste bowl, measuring 4 1/4'' in height by 4 7/8'' in diameter
Sold with a matching, two-handled, silver-plate tray by Barbour Silver, measuring 25 1/2'' from handle to handle (inner length is 24 1/2'') by 17 7/8'' in width, with a dedicatory inscription in the center as shown.
Total silver weight is 88.5 troy ounces and each piece of the tea set bears hallmarks as shown.
Wood & Hughes began in 1833 with a partnership between Jacob Wood, William Gale and Jasper Hughes. Both Wood and Hughes had been apprentices under Gale. William Gale was succeeded in the business by his son William Gale Jr. (1825-1885). Some of Gale’s works belong to museum collections, such as those of the Brooklyn Museum.
