Alexander Calder “Sillons Noirs Sur Rouge” Tapestry
Sillons Noirs Sur Rouge (Black furrows on red) is a stunning example of Alexander Calder’s artistic mastery. This rare tapestry, woven during the artist’s lifetime, exemplifies his signature exploration of bold geometric forms. The composition is a beautiful orchestration of shapes, creating a sense of animated movement across the piece.
Calder’s work from the 1970s reflects a growing appreciation for African and South American art, evident in the dynamic linework of this tapestry. This technique creates a striking visual effect of movement within the space. The red elements serve a dual purpose: they provide balance within the composition while simultaneously anchoring the movement with a sense of weight, further emphasized by the thicker pile used in these sections.
The exceptional condition of the tapestry is truly remarkable. This level of detail and artistry is unmatched in any other Calder tapestry I have encountered. It is undoubtedly a museum-quality piece, worthy of a place in any distinguished collection. -
