Description
Georgian Sampler, 1815, by Ann Platt. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering floral border. Colours green, blue, gold, silver, pink and black. Verse entitled 'Live to Die' reads, 'You whose fond wishes do to Heaven aspire, Who make those blest abodes your sole desire: If you are wise, and hope that bliss to gain, Use well your time live not an Hour in Vain. Let not the Morrow your vain Thoughts Employ, But think this day the last you shall Enjoy.'. Signed and dated in heart shaped cartouches, 'Ann Platt 1815 Aged 11 Yrs 1815'. A good set of motifs, including a country scene at the bottom. On the left is a cottage, smoke rising from the chimney and a tree behind. In the field outside, a lady stands holding a flower and a gentleman holding a stick. A dog, cow and goat stand in the foreground. Other motifs include birds, angels, a fruit basket with a parrot perched on top, potted flowering plants and butterflies. Framed in a modern wood frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is stitched to calico slip over mountboard acid free card. Frame backed with cardboard and sealed with tape. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Period: 19th Century Condition: Good. Good. Two small holes. A few pale patchy stains, barely visible. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.
