Jean Lurçat “Phoebus et les ailes” Tapestry
Jean Lurçat (1892-1966) was a renowned French artist, famous for his work in the field of tapestry. In collaboration with the Pinton Frères workshop in Aubusson, he created exceptional pieces, including the magnificent tapestry “Phoebus et les ailes” (Phoebus and the Wings).
Measuring 235 x 230 cm, “Phoebus et les ailes” is a work that reveals all of Jean Lurçat’s artistic talent. This tapestry, made of wool, illustrates the mythological figure of Phoebus, the Greek god of the sun and light, surrounded by majestic wings which symbolize freedom and power.
The use of wool in this piece gives a rich texture and a captivating visual effect. Every detail of the tapestry is carefully crafted, testifying to the artisanal mastery of the Pinton Frères workshop and the artistic vision of Jean Lurçat.
Our Gallery welcomes this masterpiece into its collection, thus highlighting Lurçat’s talent and artistic heritage. This remarkable piece embodies the perfect alliance between the tradition of Aubusson tapestry and the modern vision of Lurçat.
The Collection celebrates the creativity and innovation of Jean Lurçat, an artist who left his mark on the history of tapestry. “Phoebus and the Wings” is a testament to the importance of his work and its lasting influence on the art world.
Reference: in the catalog of the exhibition “Jean Lurçat – Ten Years After” at the Museum of Modern Art of the city of Paris in 1976, appears the original tapestry PHÉBUS ET LES AILES woven at Tabard in 1962. -
