Description
A pair of petit point needlework panels, framed in walnut frames, that have candle arms and sconces fitted to the bottoms. In the style of early 18th century originals, but worked in circa 1900. One with a couple underneath trees, in a country landscape. A cottage on a hill in the background. A dog, flowers and foliage in the foreground. The gent is playing a horn and is holding a shepherds crook. One tree is full of fruit. The other is similar, except the lady and gent have switched sides and the gent plays a lute. The lute has metallic strings. They are worked in petit point, using silk and fine wool-like threads on a canvas ground. Colours red, cream, yellow, green, purple, pink, orange, brown and blue. Framed in an old, possibly original walnut veneered frame. No glass. Mounting: The piece is tacked to a wooden board. For two very similar examples dated to Queen Anne, formerly in the Irwin Untermyer Collection, see The Metropolitan Museum Collection, New York, accession numbers: 64.101.1016 and 64.101.1017.
