Description
Antique Norfolk Sampler, 1845, by EJ White. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering leafy border. Colours green, black, brown and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-13. The alphabets are seperated by narrow decorative bands. Inscription reads, 'A good education is a great blessing.'. Signed and dated 'E. J. White Aged 7 Yrs. 1845'. A linked octagon border along the bottom contains the signature with a fruit basket either side. Framed in a modern wood frame with clear acrylic in place of glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to board. Frame backed with chipboard and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Period: 19th Century Condition: Generally Good. No holes. A few stains along the top edge. No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. Slight colour run around the green threads. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
