Mid-century Hooked Rug
-
Description
This extraordinary one of a kind rug dates from the 1940s or 1950's . Both graphically and in it's construction methods it references 1940s work by artists Adolf Gottleib and Juaquin Torres Garcia. It's Pictorialist design references the artistic movement known as Constructivism. The rug was produced in sections which were then attached to each other along the back. Burlap and found pieces of fabric physically tie together the sections. Some of the strips along the back are screenprinted pieces of what seems to be a Royal Canadian Mounties, (Canadian Mounted Rifles) felt banner and a California felt banner. A great example of Outsider Art. Possibly made by a member of the Canadian Mounted Rifles who were a mounted infantry.
