Description
Probably one of the most beautiful batik textile design from Indonesia, the wraparound skit also known as Kain Panjang was an iconic design from Cirebon, North Coast of Java. The Cloud design is called Megamendung in local language and it demanded a lengthy process of hand-drawing, waxing dying and re-dying until the right colors were achieved. This piece, circa 1950s, is particularly rare because on the background of the clouds, there are also six winged dragons, adding to the complexity of the piece, rendering it a very desirable piece for collector.
A similar piece can be found in the textile collection of Dallas Museum of Art 1991.58 -
