Description
A rare Japanese Woodblock print by Itō Shinsui (1898-1972) entitled Backstage (or Gakuya 楽屋 in Japanese). Created in Showa 30th year (1955), the print is in a large format of Double Oban, possibly depicts actress Shizue Natsukawa (1909-1999). The composition broke away from traditional Bijin-ga (Beauty Print) with the back of the character facing the viewer and her delicate face only revealed from the reflection of the mirror. The kimono she wears has an eye-catching geometrical pattern reflecting a new post-war aesthetic. The work is signed Shinsui with artist's red ink seal in print as well as the seal of the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō. Titled and dated in Japanese lower left margin.
The work is from an American collection. It retains a vibrant color from a strong impression and in impeccable condition.
For another print, see lot 373 in Sotheby's Sale Japanese and Korean Art, March 21st, 2000. - More Information
