Description
1966 Abstract Swedish Modern Portrait Painting by Thomas Ekvall
Offered for sale is a 1966 Scandinavian Modern abstract oil painting portrait of a young man by the Swedish artist Thomas Ekvall. The painting has great textures and is done in an angular cubist style. The work is signed and dated by the artist in the lower right. The painting is on a European artist's board and is displayed in the original vintage frame of the period.
Thomas Ekvall was "born in Lindesberg in 1953. Grew up in Partille from 1960.
Drew a lot as a child. Art ran in the family. An uncle in Stockholm was an artist. In 1965 I saw van Gogh at the Gothenburg Museum of Art. It lit a fire in me that still burns. I started taking painting courses early. Attended Hovedskou’s painting school evening classes in 1965–66 and 1976–77. There I was “shaped” for life. Drew from a model at the School of Design and Crafts (today HDK) evening classes in 1968. In 1978 I was admitted to the Valand Academy of Fine Arts and studied there for 5 years.
Human figures in landscapes run like a common thread through my painting.
Painting has been my main occupation for nearly 50 years. At the same time, I have worked in healthcare and as an art and visual arts teacher at upper secondary schools, art schools, and art courses. Now I am retired and paint full time. I have worked with printmaking and drawing, but mainly oil painting, all these years." (translated from Swedish)
