A pair of miniature views of port towns on the trade route.
Painting (a) – Cape Town from the Sea
Painting (b) – Jamestown, St. Helena
Small scale views on copper or ivory were produced in the painting studios of Canton for a relatively short period from 1800-1820. These views were popular with traders and seamen as momentos and to send back to loved ones to give them an indication of the extraordinary places that had been visited in East Asia and on the trade route between Europe and China. Cape Town and St. Helena were key towns visited.
Each: oil on copper
St. Helena: Frame: 6 3/4 ins high and 8 3/8 ins wide, Image 3 1/2 ins high and 5 1/4 ins wide.
Cape Town: Frame: 6 5/8 ins high and 8 5/16 ins wide; Image: 3 1/5 ins high and 5 1/4 ins wide.
