An Exceptional And Beautiful Inlaid Tortoiseshell Plaque

  • Description
An Exceptional And Beautiful Inlaid Tortoiseshell Plaque.
Extremely fine inlaid with engraved mother of pearl grapes, the young Bacchus, flower vases, wine tazza and wine jug, the branches from grapes inlaid with gold colour thread and Pique work.

This very rare plaque could be the work of Jean Bellekin, 1597/98-1636 (possibly the father of Cornelis Bellekin)
It is known that Jean Bellikin engraved in mother of pearl in a very high standard, it is possible that he has used the engraving of Bacchus by Jacob Matham from Haarlem 1571-1631 as inspiration.
Jacob Matham was the steph son of Hendrik Goltzius.

Striking is to see on the engraving the similarities of the objects in comparison with the objects on our plaque. Striking is also that Hendrik Goltzius, the Steph father of Jacob Matham also has engraved a Bacchus with a silver Tassa in his hand with the well known Auricular motif, the same as on the engraving of his Steph son. These silver tassa’s have all been made by the famous Dutch silver smith van Vianen and also striking is that the tassa in the hand of the young Bacchus on our plaque is quite similar with the tassa made by: Christiaan van Vianen in 1628, now in the collection of the Rijksmuseum Twenthe.
So the maker of our plaque was clearly inspired by these two engravings.
    Dutch 17th Century.
