Description
French Aubusson verdure tapestry cartoon, gouache on paper, in a mahogany frame with an ebonized inner molding, depicting charming country scene of woodlands, river, bridge, a chateau and mountains in the background with bold trees, foliage and bird. Tapestry cartoons are the life size models from which tapestries are woven. The wools and silks were died to match the painting and the weaver copied it. The quality of the finished tapestry depended upon the artistry of the painter combined with the skill of the weaver.
