Architect -Architectural Association Madrid – 2003
Barbara Perez Marina studied at the Architectural Association in London where she graduated in 2003, following her studies she joined Richard Rogers Studio in London & Madrid.
Since 2011 Barbara works in Madrid at the architectural Estudio Lamela.
A formalist architect at heart, she concentrates and expresses her concerns through parametric design, employing the latest technologies and materials available, such as industrial 3D printing and glass reinforced concrete.
Shapes and form when beautiful are always made of chain of « magic numbers » her mission is to find them and translate them into sculpture.
Geometry, repetition, proportion, regulatory paths, rhythms of growth are all represented through the extraction of ocean data such as geographic location, weather conditions, height and frequency of waves on a specific date.
After applying basic mathematical principles these numbers become physical forms, with endless possibilities as the limits of shapes and form in this particular case can only be defined by Nature.
The scale of the sculptures is ultimately ambiguous by the detail and its architectural influence. The similarity to architectural models accentuates the desire to be larger. For this same reason the pieces keep an experimental prototype character.
These wall sculptures are mathematical maps of the ocean at a precise date & time, however once the creative process has been finished their numerical aspect is lost, to become a breathtaking appeal to the senses, the beautiful soft tactile shapes, the subtle range of colour, the variety of textures to the surfaces, and the all around finest quality of the materials and finish make these pieces into a unique art form.
