Description
The painting well rendered and detailed showing an ocean going junk in full sail with multiple Chinese characters on deck. Presumably a fishing boat, nets are draped over the sides as the junk navigates through a busy sea lane.
Junks were ubiquitous in Chinese waters since the second century CE and the construction remained largely unchanged over the centuries with a flat keeless hull, battened sails for ease of adjustment, and divided interior compartments or bulkheads that would reduce flooding in case they were holed.
It is rare to see these paintings in their original frames and in addition it has its original Chinese metal hooks.
The painting loose lined.
Canton, China for the export market. C. 1830-50 -
