Description
A very large and highly decorative glazed Terracotta Tondo / Wall Sculpture in the style of "Della Robbia".
The glazed and brightly colorful, shiny sculptures were a typical Renaissance art-form, invented and perfected by Lucca Della Robbia, a Florentine artist who passed on the secrets and mastery of creating the bright and shiny surfaces to younger generations of his family. Today, these works, created in the 15th and 16th Centuries, look as brilliant and colorful as when they were created. For about a century the Della Robbia dynasty produced these highly desirable artworks, secular and sacred in subject manner. By the middle of the 16th Century however the look fell out of favor until interest was rekindled in the 19th Century. Today we see a renewed interest by curators, collectors conservators and scholars.
Our present example here was produced in the 19th century during this revival period, as a unusually large round wall sculpture featuring the typical wreath of fruit, vegetable flowers and little critters surrounding an armorial shield (not identified) -
