FRENCH SCHOOL, CIRCA 1830
Circle of Alexandre DUBOIS-DRAHONET
Portrait of Auguste de Montaigu in a gunner’s uniform resting in a relaxed manner with one hand on hip and the
other holding a glove against a chair. He stands on a brightly patterned carpet with a wall behind him and in the
distance is a mountainous landscape.

Auguste de Montaigu, born 1812 in Paris is pictured here as a young gunner in his uniform. His father (Auguste
de Montaigu died 1846) was the first Comte de Montaigu and Auguste inherited this title on his death. He
bought the château de La Bretesche in Missillac, on the west coast of France near Nantes and was Mayor of
Missillac for 32 years. Besides his time as a gunner he also had a career as a musician, a student of Gounod.
And a painter student of Ingres. He was general councillor for Loire-Inférieure and the canton
of Saint-Gildas-des-Boisfor. He died at the château de La Bretesche in Missillac1904, at the age of 91.
