Jason Eoff — "Wild Like No Other," 2005, Oil and Resin on Panel

$ 1,995
  • Description
    A square panel by Los Angeles painter Jason Eoff (20th/21st century), executed in oil and resin in 2005. Signed, titled, and dated verso, with an orientation arrow marking the top edge. Wired and ready to hang.

    The ground is a single saturated marigold, poured and polished to a glass-slick resin finish that holds the light like enamel on a car hood. Across it Eoff scatters hundreds of small discs in a full spectrum — cobalt, chartreuse, coral, lilac, teal, black, sherbet orange — some flat and opaque, others translucent, many stacked two and three deep so a disc reads as a colored lens over the one beneath. The dots crowd into a dense band through the center and disperse toward the edges, the whole thing organized like a burst caught mid-expansion. Raised above the glossy field, they cast real shadows; the surface is as much relief as painting.

    Eoff, Texas-born and long based in Eagle Rock, studied at Claremont Graduate University and showed with Patricia Faure Gallery in Santa Monica for roughly nine years, until the gallery's closing. He works in oil, resin and wax on panel, describing his own surfaces as having an industrial or "fetish" finish — slick as glass — and this work sits squarely in that lineage: the pristine, high-gloss Southern California tradition that runs from the Light and Space and finish fetish painters forward. The recurring starburst-and-dot compositions of these years are close cousins to his Pop Rocks series, which took the candy's fizz and scatter as an abstract structure.

    Hung against white or a muted wall, the marigold does the work of a light source. It is an unambiguously joyful painting, and a rigorous one — the exuberance is engineered.
