Description
Provenance
Auditorium Building, Chicago
Estate of Ralph Marlowe Line until 1989
Louis Sullivan revolutionized American architecture through his belief that a building's form should express its function. The Auditorium Building in Chicago (1887–1889) stands as one of his most ambitious early masterworks and a testament to this philosophy.
Designed in partnership with Dankmar Adler, the Auditorium Building was a pioneering mixed-use structure combining a 4,300-seat theater, hotel, and office spaces under one massive roof. Sullivan's genius shone in the acoustically perfect auditorium, where he integrated structural innovation with lavish ornamentation. Golden arches framed the proscenium, while intricate stenciling and electric lighting created an atmosphere of democratic grandeur—luxury accessible to ordinary citizens, not just the wealthy elite. -
