Paul Frederich Meyerheim, Still Life with Fowl, 1888 . Oil on Board. Measures approximatley 20" x 16". The board is 1/2 inch think. One of his top works fetched an impressive $229,000 at Sotheby's NY auction in April 2008, cementing his status as a luminary in the art world. --- Paul Frederich Meyerheim was German painter and illustrator born in 1842 Berlin, Germany. He came from a family of artists and his father, Friedrich Eduard Meyerheim, was a well-known painter. Paul Frederich Meyerheim is known for his paintings of animals, particularly dogs, and horses which he depicted with remarkable skill and detail. Meyerheim studied at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin and later traveled to Paris to further his artistic education. He gained recognition for his animal paintings, which often portrayed scenes of hunting, wildlife, and domestic animals in various settings. In addition to his painting, Meyerheim also worked as an illustrator, contributing to various publications and books. He began teaching at the Berlin Academy of Art in 1893. He was lightly regarded during his lifetime and received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the arts. Today his paintings are held in collections around the world, and he is remembered as one of the leading animals painters od the 19th century.
