A 19th century Italian pietra dura plaque, an exquisite example of the Florentine mosaic technique where colorful semi-precious stones are meticulously fitted to create a detailed image. This piece depicts a man in traditional attire, showcasing the jeweler-like precision and "painting in stone" quality that made Italian hardstone inlay a global symbol of luxury.
Circa 1870, this original period work was created during a vibrant 19th century revival of the traditional Renaissance craft.
Crafted from various semi-precious stones including jasper and agate, the plaque is set into a solid marble backing with a polished finish. Rooted in the Neoclassical tradition with echoes of the Renaissance, this work reflects the enduring Italian mastery of transforming natural minerals into romantic, life-like portraiture.
