    Mashiko Jōmon-style Tsubo (vase) featuring the zōgan (inlay) technique with distinctive rope-impressed decoration. The vase bears the artist’s seal, “Ta.”

    Includes the original signed wooden box (tomobako) with the artist’s signature and seal reading Tatsuzō, along with an enclosed paper. The final dated entry on the paper is Shōwa 41 (1966), written after the artist’s travels to Long Beach and Europe, indicating the piece was made in 1966 or earlier.

    Created by Tatsuzō Shimaoka (1919–2007), who was designated a National Living Treasure by the Emperor of Japan in 1996 for his mastery of rope-impressed inlay on stoneware.

    Made in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan.
