Alexander Markovich "Understanding Dharmata - The Unconditioned Truth"

$ 9,475
  • Description
    Alexander Markovich, the esteemed American artist painted this work entitled, "Understanding Dharmata- The unconditioned truth", circa 1985. Created as a diptych, the work consists of pictographic black and white strokes and symbols against a radiant gold background. The paintings concern the Buddhist concept of Dharmata, or the essence of all things- a truth that is revealed only upon death. This work proved prescient for Markovich- an artist whose life was tragically cut short. Dharmata is said to manifest as a "luminosity dissolving into union" as one becomes instantaneously aware of a fully connected world of light, sound and color. Realized as a diptych, this painting conveys that fantastic immediacy. As described by Svetlana Rakic in her book "Alexander Markovich: A Journey Towards the Divine", "the energy of brush marks is simultaneously condensed and dispersed; the paint is diluted and thickened in layer upon layer; we are invited to indulge in the pure, non-conceptual abstraction of color-light, while at the same time we are seduced into image grasping attempts to decipher the figurative references within the painting."

    Markovich produced all of his work in a single decade spanning from 1980 to 1990. This piece represents a stunning and important example of his practice, encapsulating his skill and versatility as a painter, as well as the themes that occupied him throughout his career. Rife with art historical references spanning from Chinese calligraphy to gestural abstraction of Cy Twombly and zen steeped compositions of Brice Marden and Mark Tobey, this piece is sure to delight discerning collectors of modern art, as well as those with a penchant for beautiful paintings. The pieces are presented in custom yellow gilt frames. These works are described on pages 205-216 (with color plates on pages 209 and 211, as well as on the cover of Rakic's book) of "Alexander Markovich: Journey Towards the Divine" (included with purchase) by Svetlana Rakic. Excellent condition. Each panel is available for purchase individually at $4975 each.
